Biografia del pittore

Daniel Chodowiecki (1726-1801) was a German painter and printmaker of Huguenot and Polish ancestry, who is most famous as an etcher. He was born in Danzig, Poland, on October 16, 1726, to Gottfried Chodowiecki, a tradesman, and Henriette Ayrer, of Swiss ancestry, a Huguenot. Daniel's grandfather Christian was also a Danzig tradesman, who had moved his business there from Toruń. Chodowiecki spent most of his life in Berlin, where he died on February 7, 1801. Chodowiecki was largely self-taught, and he achieved his first popular success with the sentimental painting The Parting of Jean Calas from His Family (1767), which shows the influence of Greuze. He began engraving in 1758 and produced the famous History of the Life of Jesus Christ. Many books were published in Prussia with plates or vignettes by Chodowiecki. His prints represent in great detail the life of the bourgeoisie during the Zopfstil period, a time between Rococo and Classicism. As an illustrator, Chodowiecki attracted attention in 1769 with twelve etchings for Lessing's Minna von Barnhelm. He was also commissioned to illustrate Johann Bernhard Basedow's Elementarwerk. This publication has achieved enormous success, thanks to the efforts of both, Basedow and Chodowiecki, who supervised the graphic design of the publication. He illustrated the works of Goethe, Lavater, Rousseau, and Shakespeare. In 1797 Chodowiecki was appointed director of the Academy of Arts in Berlin, where he died on 7 February 1801. The bulk of his work was in illustrating scientific books by Basedow, Buffon, Lavater, Pestalozzi, and others. He also painted many portraits of Polish nobility and was interested in Huguenot and Polish history as well, making some paintings on the subjects. Chodowiecki was proud of his Polish roots. After the last partition of Poland, he called himself "a descendant of a great nation that will soon cease to exist." Soon afterward, in 1796 and 1797, two calendars were published, illustrated by Chodowiecki and his associates, containing vignettes from Poland's history, the most important moments, according to the artist. In conclusion, Daniel Chodowiecki was a German painter and printmaker of Huguenot and Polish ancestry, who is most famous as an etcher. He was largely self-taught and achieved his first popular success with the sentimental painting The Parting of Jean Calas from His Family. He illustrated the works of Goethe, Lavater, Rousseau, and Shakespeare and was appointed director of the Academy of Arts in Berlin in 1797. Chodowiecki was proud of his Polish roots and made some paintings on Huguenot and Polish history.
