Walter Valentini Biography

Walter Valentini, born in 1928 in Pergola, a small town in the province of Pesaro, Italy, was a prolific artist whose work spanned several decades and encompassed a variety of mediums including painting, sculpture, engraving, and graphic design. His journey into the world of art began early, and by the late 1940s, Valentini had moved to Rome, where he spent a year before relocating to Milan in 1949. It was in Milan that he studied under notable artists Max Huber, Albe Steiner, and Luigi Veronesi, absorbing a diverse range of artistic influences and techniques. In 1950, Valentini made another significant move, this time to Urbino, a city renowned for its rich Renaissance culture. He lived there until 1955, attending the Scuola del libro – Institute of Fine Arts. This period was crucial for Valentini as he discovered the art of engraving and came into deep contact with Renaissance culture, which would profoundly influence his future work. After completing his studies, Valentini returned to Milan, where he embarked on a career as a graphic designer while dedicating himself increasingly to painting. Valentini's artistic output is characterized by a fascination with geometric forms and a rigorous, mathematical approach to composition. This interest in geometry was not merely technical but was imbued with a poetic sensibility, as Valentini himself believed that poetry could be created through geometry. His work often explored themes of astronomy and cosmography, drawing inspiration from the celestial mechanics and architecture of the universe. Despite the mathematical precision of his compositions, Valentini's work is marked by a sense of poetry and a deeply personal imprint, suggesting a universe beyond the mere physical dimensions of space and time. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, Valentini's work evolved to include abstract works on wood and paper, characterized by a precise sense of geometry, proportions, and rhythm. His art from this period reflects his earlier influences from Urbino, with many pieces showcasing elements of the Renaissance utopia of the "Ideal City." These works feature stylized archways, open geometry, and incomplete circles, alluding to meticulous planning and unfinished architecture. Valentini's contributions to the art world were recognized with numerous exhibitions, critical contributions, and awards both in Italy and internationally. In 1979, he was invited to a seminar at the University of Massachusetts in Boston as part of an exhibition of Italian artists. He was awarded the Grand Prix of the "X International Biennial of Graphics" in Krakow in 1984, which also organized an exhibition for him in Krakow and Torun. His work was featured in solo exhibitions across the globe, from Boston, Stockholm, Hamburg, Cologne, and New York to Aspen, Tokyo, Monaco, Siegburg, Vienna, and Ankara. In addition to his artistic achievements, Valentini's work has had a lasting impact on the cultural landscape. His etchings, known as "Acquaforte" in Italian, inspired the brand identity of AQUA Forte, a restaurant that celebrates Italian Renaissance art and cuisine. Valentini's original artwork is displayed at the restaurant, serving as a tribute to the inspiration he provided in bringing a passion for Italy's beauty and culture to life. Walter Valentini passed away on May 21, 2022, in a hospital in Milan, the city where he had lived and worked since 1957. His funeral was held on May 23 at the Lambrate Cemetery in Milan, where he now rests. Valentini's legacy continues through his art, which remains a testament to his belief in the poetic potential of geometry and his lifelong exploration of the universe's architectural and celestial mechanics.
