Richard Tuttle Biography

Richard Dean Tuttle, born on July 12, 1941, in Rahway, New Jersey, is an American artist renowned for his postminimalist works that are characterized by their small scale, casual demeanor, subtle intricacies, and intimate nature. His art, which spans across sculpture, painting, drawing, printmaking, artist’s books, installation, and even furniture, is a testament to his innovative use of scale and line, making him a pivotal figure in the postminimalist movement. Tuttle's journey into the art world began after he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1963. Following his graduation, he moved to New York City, where he briefly attended The Cooper Union School of Art and Architecture. It was during this period that Tuttle began working as an assistant at The Betty Parsons Gallery, a job that would lead to his first solo exhibition at the gallery in 1965, titled "Richard Tuttle: Constructed Paintings." The 1960s were a formative time for Tuttle. He met and befriended Agnes Martin, a contemporary painter whose subtle abstract paintings would have a profound influence on his work. This period also saw Tuttle's exposure to the Pop art movement and the beginnings of Minimalism, genres that prepared him for artistic change and reinvention. Despite the minimalist and conceptual trends of the time, Tuttle's work stood out for its embrace of humble materials such as wire, paper, cloth, and wood, and its engagement with scale and alternative systems of display. One of Tuttle's notable early works is the 'Paper Octagonals' series (1970), which consisted of 12 works made from paper shapes cut from a template and glued to a wall. These works, despite their thin material and lack of color, command presence through their misshapen composition, blurring the lines between painting and sculpture. Another significant series is the 'Wire Pieces' (1971—1972), where Tuttle extended the form of his pencil drawings with wire and shadows, creating three-dimensional works that further exemplify his innovative use of materials. Throughout the late 1980s and into the 1990s, Tuttle began to increase the scale of his work. During his time in Switzerland in the early 1990s, he worked on a number of large-scale abstract works for Kunsthaus Zug, including "Replace the Abstract Picture Plane IV" (1996—1999), which consisted of 40 pieces of asymmetrically placed plywood painted in vivid colors. In 2004, Tuttle created "Splash" (2004), an installation made from 140,000 pieces of white ceramic tiles and colored glass, marking his first public art commission and showcasing his ability to work on a grand scale. Tuttle's work has been the subject of numerous solo exhibitions worldwide, including at prestigious institutions such as the Bard Graduate Center, New York; M WOODS, Beijing; Phillips Collection, Washington, D.C.; and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. His work is included in the permanent collections of several museums and galleries, including the Brooklyn Museum, the Centre Pompidou, the Israel Museum, Tate Modern, and the Whitney Museum of American Art. Richard Tuttle's art transcends easy categorization, occupying a unique space between painting, sculpture, and drawing. His work is celebrated for its ability to summon poetry from everyday materials and forms, and for its profound engagement with the complexities of perception and language. Over six decades, Tuttle has continually reinvented the landscape of contemporary art, challenging conventional notions of genre and media, and sensitizing viewers to the nuances of perception and the unconscious.
