Orfeo Tamburi Biography

Orfeo Tamburi, born on May 28, 1910, in Jesi, Italy, was a distinguished Italian painter and scenic designer whose artistic journey significantly influenced the 20th-century art world. His early education was completed at the local Istituto Tecnico, where he graduated in 1926. Demonstrating early promise in the arts, Tamburi was awarded a stipend in 1928 to study at the prestigious Accademia di Belle Arti di Roma. It was here that he crossed paths with notable figures such as Ennio Flaiano and Vincenzo Cardarelli, which marked the beginning of a vibrant artistic career. Tamburi's artistic pursuits led him to Paris, a city that would play a pivotal role in his development as an artist. Influenced by the works of Cezanne, he immersed himself in the Parisian art scene, a move that enriched his artistic vocabulary and exposed him to a broader spectrum of artistic expressions. Despite the outbreak of World War II, Tamburi chose to remain in Paris, a decision that underscored his deep connection to the city and its cultural milieu. During the war years, Tamburi's creativity found an outlet in scenic design. In 1941, he designed figures and scenography for "La sacra rappresentazione di Abrham e Isaac" by Feo Belcari, showcasing his versatility and innovative approach to visual storytelling. This period also saw him participating as an actor in the segment "L’invidia" of the film "The Seven Deadly Sins" directed by Roberto Rossellini in 1951, further highlighting his multifaceted talents. The post-war years were a time of extensive travel and exploration for Tamburi. He ventured across Europe, absorbing influences and expanding his artistic horizons. The 1960s marked a significant phase in his career as he traveled to the United States, where he was commissioned to photograph American cities for the journal Fortune. This project not only broadened his artistic repertoire but also introduced his work to a wider audience. Tamburi's contributions to the art world were recognized and celebrated through various accolades. In 1971, he was awarded a gold medal for Merit for Culture by the Italian president, and in 1975, he received the Premio Internazionale “Città Eterna” in Rome. His commitment to his hometown of Jesi remained strong throughout his life. In 1964, he donated many of his works to the Pinacoteca Civica di Jesi, and the town established a prize dedicated to his mother in recognition of his contributions. Orfeo Tamburi's artistic legacy is characterized by his exploration of city scenes, buildings, landscapes, and figure sculpture. His work has been offered at auction multiple times, reflecting the enduring interest in and appreciation for his artistic achievements. Tamburi's paintings, known for their vibrant colors and dynamic compositions, continue to captivate audiences and collectors worldwide. Tamburi's artistic journey came to an end on November 26, 1994, in Ermont, France. However, his legacy lives on through his artworks, which continue to be celebrated and studied for their significant contributions to the art of the 20th century. Orfeo Tamburi's life and work remain a testament to the power of artistic expression and the enduring impact of an artist dedicated to exploring and capturing the essence of his surroundings.
