Maurizio Nannucci Biography

Maurizio Nannucci is an Italian contemporary artist renowned for his multidisciplinary approach to art, which encompasses photography, video, neon installations, sound installations, artist's books, and editions. Born on April 20, 1939, in Florence, Italy, Nannucci's career has been marked by a continuous exploration of the interplay between art, language, and the urban landscape. Nannucci's journey into the world of art began with his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and Berlin. His early years were also characterized by his involvement with experimental theater groups, where he contributed as a set designer. This period was crucial in shaping his visual language and his interest in the relationship between art and language. In the mid-1960s, Nannucci began to consolidate the foundational elements of his artistic expression. He created the first Dattilogrammi, where words reclaimed their symbolic power. His engagement with Fluxus artists and his collaboration with the Studio di Fonologia Musicale in Florence to produce electronic music further expanded his artistic repertoire. Nannucci's work with sound installations often utilized voices and words, emphasizing the auditory dimension of language. A pivotal moment in Nannucci's career came in 1967 when he presented his first neon light texts at his solo exhibition at the Centro Arte Viva in Trieste. These works highlighted the ephemeral nature of writing over the materiality of objects, a theme that would become central to his practice. The neon works introduced a new dimension of meaning to his art and altered the perception of space. In 1968, Nannucci founded the Exempla publishing house and Zona Archives Edizioni in Florence. These ventures were dedicated to publishing books and catalogues on contemporary artists, reflecting his belief that publications and multiples are integral to artistic practice. Through these platforms, Nannucci disseminated the idea that art is a mental process that can be applied to mass-produced objects, thereby unifying divergent artistic threads. Throughout his career, Nannucci has been a prominent figure in international artistic experimentation, contributing significantly to Concrete Poetry and Conceptual Art. His interdisciplinary dialogue between work, architecture, and the urban landscape is evident in his collaborations with renowned architects such as Renzo Piano, Massimiliano Fuksas, Mario Botta, Nicolas Grimshaw, and Stephan Braunfels. Nannucci's neon installations have been featured in public places and institutions worldwide, including the Carpenter Center at Harvard University, the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome, the Bibliothek des Deutschen Bundestages in Berlin, and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. His work has been exhibited in major museums and galleries globally and has been a recurring participant at the Venice Biennale, Documenta in Kassel, and biennials in São Paulo, Sydney, Istanbul, and Valencia. Nannucci's contributions to the art world extend beyond his installations. He has organized over two hundred exhibitions and events, engaging with both Italian and international artists. In 1981, he founded Zona Radio, a station devoted to sound creation, poetry, and experimental music, further showcasing his commitment to multidisciplinary art forms. Nannucci's art is held in high esteem, with his works being part of prestigious museum collections, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, and the Paul Getty Art Center in Los Angeles. His unique approach to art, which combines language, light, and space to create poetic situations, has established him as one of the world's most significant neon artists. Throughout his illustrious career, Nannucci has continued to challenge the nature and role of art, producing a body of work that invites viewers to question and engage with the art in a profound and meaningful way. His legacy is one of innovation, experimentation, and a tireless pursuit of the boundaries between art, language, and experience.
