Marcello Morandini Biography

Marcello Morandini, born on May 15, 1940, in Mantua, Italy, is a distinguished figure in the realm of postwar and contemporary art. His journey into the art world began after his family moved to Varese in 1947, a city that would later play a significant role in his career. Morandini's education at the Brera Art Academy in Milan laid the foundation for his artistic development. During his time in Milan, he also gained practical experience working as an assistant designer for an industry and as a graphic designer for a professional studio. Morandini's artistic research took shape in 1962 with his initial drawings, which marked the beginning of a lifelong exploration of form, space, and structure. By 1964, he had embarked on creating his first three-dimensional works, which were showcased in his inaugural solo exhibition in Genoa in 1965, curated by Germano Celant. This exhibition set the stage for a series of more significant and challenging exhibitions in Milan, Frankfurt, and Cologne. The year 1967 was pivotal for Morandini as he was invited to the "IX Biennale" in São Paulo, Brazil, and the following year, he was honored with a personal room at the "XXXIV Biennale Internazionale d'arte" in Venice. In 1969, he represented Italian art in Brussels during the "Europalia" events. His collaboration with gallerist Carl Laszlo in Basel began in 1970, further expanding his international presence. Morandini's work is characterized by a rigorous and geometric aesthetic, often rendered in black and white, which reflects his deep interest in the interplay between light, shadow, and form. His sculptures, reliefs, and graphic works are studies in precision and optical effects, creating a dynamic interaction with the viewer. Throughout his career, Morandini has experimented with various mediums, including furniture design, showcasing his versatility and commitment to integrating art into everyday life. In 2000, Morandini's contributions to the city of Varese were recognized with a significant retrospective at the city's museum and a catalog published by Charta, Milan. His engagement with the community extended to his role as president of the Associazione Liberi Artisti della Provincia di Varese from 2003. He also shared his expertise as a lecturer at the Accademia di Brera in Milan and at the HEAA watchmaking school in La Chaux-De-Fonds, Switzerland. Morandini's influence on design is evident in his collaboration with "Abitare Baleri" in Bergamo, where he designed a collection of home furniture. His dedication to education and cultural enrichment was further demonstrated through his coordination of the "Vivere Venezia 3" project at the IUAV University of Venice and his design of a large sculpture for the Wilhelm-Hack-Museum plaza in Ludwigshafen, Germany. Throughout his illustrious career, Morandini has been recognized with numerous accolades and has participated in various international exhibitions. His works have been featured in key galleries and museums, including Haus Konstruktiv, and have been offered at auction with realized prices ranging from modest to significant sums, reflecting the high regard for his artistry. Morandini's legacy is also intertwined with the world of playing cards, where he applied his minimalist design approach to create modern designs using simple forms and colors. This venture into playing card design is a testament to his versatility and willingness to apply his artistic principles to diverse forms of media. In recent years, Morandini has continued to exhibit his work extensively, with multiple solo exhibitions in private galleries across Italy, Austria, and Germany. His commitment to his craft and his ability to adapt and explore new avenues of expression have kept his work relevant and respected in the contemporary art scene. Marcello Morandini remains a vital figure in the world of art and design, with a career that spans over five decades. His contributions to the visual language of postwar and contemporary art are marked by a distinctive style that is both intellectually rigorous and aesthetically compelling. His work continues to inspire and influence artists and designers, and his legacy is firmly established in the annals of modern art history.
