Aldo Mondino Biography

Aldo Mondino was a prominent Italian sculptor and painter, born on October 4, 1938, in Turin, Italy, where he also passed away on March 10, 2005. His artistic journey began in 1959 when he moved to Paris, a city that played a crucial role in shaping his career. In Paris, Mondino immersed himself in the vibrant artistic scene, attending the studio of William Heyter at Atelier 17 and studying at the Ecole du Louvre. He also took a mosaic course at the French Academy under the guidance of Severini and his assistant, Licata. This period was marked by significant friendships and acquaintances with influential artists and maestros such as Tancredi, Jou roy, Errò, Lebel, Matta, and Lam, which were instrumental in his formation as an artist. Mondino's early exhibitions showcased his diverse talents and interests. In 1960, he held an exhibition at Galerie Bellechasse in Paris, displaying works with a Surrealist feel. This was followed by the politically charged Anti-Procès exhibition, organized by Jou roy and Lebel at Galerie des 4 Saisons. His return to Italy in 1961 for military service did not halt his artistic endeavors. Thanks to Antonio Carena, a Turinese artist and owner of Galleria L’Immagine, Mondino had his first solo show, which still bore the influence of his Parisian experiences. In 1962, Enrico Crispolti organized an exhibition at Galleria Alpha in Venice, presenting Mondino's series of pictures emblazoned with words, with figures inside each letter reminiscent of illuminated codices. Mondino's work is characterized by an ironic approach to art and the use of unconventional materials, including caramel and chocolate. He pioneered the art of painting on linoleum and created mosaics using a variety of materials such as chocolate, seeds, coffee, and legumes. His innovative use of materials and techniques set him apart in the art world, making him a unique figure in contemporary art. Throughout his career, Mondino participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Italy and internationally. Notable exhibitions include his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1976, 1993, and his works being showcased at prestigious venues such as the Museum für Moderne Kunst – Palais Lichtenstein in Vienna, the Sulthanamet Museum Topkapi in Istanbul, and the Museo Ebraico in Bologna. His love for Spain was evident in his series of bulls and bullfighters, which was exhibited by Alessandro Bagnai in 1996. In the decade following his death, a series of exhibitions paid homage to Mondino's work, highlighting his significant contributions to the art world. These exhibitions included "Primo Coppi, secondo Bartali, terzo Mondino (RaccontAldo Mondino) opere 1963-2000" at Colossi Arte Contemporanea in Chiari – Brescia, "Mappamondino" at the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in San Marino, and "Aldo Mondino: Moderno, postmoderno, contemporaneo" at the Museo d’arte contemporanea, Villa Croce in Genoa. Mondino's artistic universe was vast and varied, drawing inspiration from his travels around the world. His works often depicted common and extraordinary figures, influenced by the cultures of the East, North Africa, India, and the Jewish tradition. His ability to blend humor, irony, and a keen observation of the world around him made his art resonate with a wide audience. Aldo Mondino's legacy is that of a multi-faceted, unconventional artist who constantly evolved, pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms. His work remains a testament to his creativity, wit, and the profound impact he had on the contemporary art scene.
