Jason Martin Biography

Jason Martin, born in 1970 on the Channel Island of Jersey, is a contemporary British artist renowned for his monochromatic abstract paintings and mixed-media works that delve into the physical properties of paint. Martin's artistic journey began with his education at the Chelsea School of Art in London from 1989-90, followed by his studies at Goldsmiths College from 1990-92, where he honed his skills and developed his unique artistic voice. Martin's work is characterized by its intense investigation of pigment and the sculptural qualities of paint applied to hard surfaces such as aluminum, stainless steel, or Plexiglas. His technique involves dragging, scraping, squeegeeing, or combing thick layers of oil or acrylic gel across these supports, creating textured, often monochromatic surfaces that blur the lines between painting and sculpture. This method results in dynamic compositions that evoke natural landscapes or abstracted figurations, with the physicality of the paint itself becoming a central aspect of the artwork. Throughout his career, Martin has been fascinated by the materiality of paint and the act of painting, viewing his work as a series of choreographed movements that capture a moment in time. His paintings are not just visual experiences but sensory ones, inviting viewers to engage with the texture, depth, and color of the surfaces. Martin's exploration of monochrome is particularly notable, as he often adds sophisticated pigment variations to modulate the basic tones of his works, creating richly tactile and visually arresting pieces. Martin's solo debut in 1996 at the Lisson Gallery in London marked the beginning of his prominence in the art world. He gained further recognition the following year by participating in the Royal Academy's groundbreaking exhibition "Sensation: Young British Artists from the Saatchi Collection." Despite his association with the Young British Artists (YBAs), Martin's serious engagement with the language and grammar of painting set him apart from his contemporaries, focusing more on the formal and material aspects of art rather than conceptual or thematic concerns. Over the years, Martin has continued to push the boundaries of painting, experimenting with different materials and techniques. His work has evolved from using large brushes to manipulate paint on metal surfaces to incorporating mixed media, including metal-cast sculptures. These sculptural paintings, which he describes as "painting as sculpture," further blur the distinction between the two disciplines, showcasing Martin's ability to innovate within the tradition of abstraction. Martin's oeuvre can be understood through four main pillars: monochrome, sculpture, material painting, and hedonism. His exhibitions, often titled simply with color names or references to painting materials, reflect his minimalist approach and deep engagement with the history and possibilities of painting. Despite the apparent simplicity of his works, they are layered with meaning and technique, embodying a modernist appreciation for the gestural and the monochrome while also hinting at figuration and landscape. Jason Martin's work has been exhibited widely in solo and group exhibitions around the world, including prestigious venues such as the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice, the Museum gegenstandsfreier Kunst in Otterndorf, and the Schauwerk Sindelfingen in Germany. His contributions to contemporary art have been recognized with several awards, and his works are held in numerous public and private collections globally. Living and working between London and Portugal, Martin continues to explore the limits of painting, constantly seeking new ways to express the interplay of color, form, and texture. His dedication to the medium and innovative approach have established him as a significant figure in contemporary art, one who challenges our perceptions of what painting can be in the 21st century.
