Renato Mambor Biography

Renato Mambor was a multifaceted Italian artist whose career spanned several decades, marked by a continuous evolution of style and medium. Born on December 4, 1936, in Rome, Italy, Mambor emerged as a significant figure in the post-war Italian art scene, particularly during the vibrant and transformative 1960s. He passed away in his birth city on December 6, 2014, leaving behind a legacy of innovation and artistic exploration. Mambor's early artistic endeavors were characterized by a departure from the legacy of Alberto Burri and the European Informal Art. He was an original interpreter of the new artistic climate that emerged at the turn of the 1960s, a period that saw a shift from monochrome and the annulment of expressive qualities in art to a re-engagement with the image, particularly as a mass-media icon. This shift was in response to the changing social, political, and aesthetic contexts of the time. As a member of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo, Mambor was in the company of other notable artists such as Mario Schifano, Pino Pascali, and Jannis Kounellis. This group was instrumental in shaping the artistic landscape of Rome and Italy more broadly. Mambor, in particular, is credited with founding the "Conceptual Neo-Figuration" movement, which sought to blend conceptual art with figurative elements. Mambor's artistic interests were diverse, encompassing photography, performance art, and installation art. His work in the 1960s was influenced by various disciplines and expressive fields foreign to traditional painting, such as performance, photography, theater, and installations. He contributed significantly to the process of dematerialization of art, which involved pushing the boundaries of language and venturing outside the spaces traditionally assigned to art. This process left a profound mark on both Italian and international art between the second half of the 1960s and the 1970s. The artist's career can be divided into different phases, each marked by distinct styles and techniques. His early works included monochrome pieces, Timbri (Stamps), and Ricalchi (Tracings), which were followed by his involvement in performance and theatrical activities. In the 1990s and 2000s, Mambor returned to painting, demonstrating his versatility and ability to reinvent his artistic language. Mambor's experimental research was comprehensive, as documented in a book that collected papers delivered during a study afternoon dedicated to the artist. This event was held on November 27, 2015, to mark the first anniversary of his passing at the Museo Laboratorio d’Arte Contemporanea (MLAC) at the Sapienza University in Rome. The book aimed to cover the different phases of Mambor's career, based on documents and sources, some of which were unpublished. In addition to his visual arts practice, Mambor was also active in cinema. He worked as a writer, a poster designer, and a character actor. His involvement in the film industry included participation as a performer in Federico Fellini's iconic film "La Dolce Vita." Throughout his life, Mambor received support and recognition for his work. The Mambor Archive, managed by Patrizia Speciale and Blu Mambor, has been instrumental in promoting and supporting research on the artist's work. His contributions to art have been celebrated in various exhibitions and retrospectives, both during his lifetime and posthumously. Renato Mambor's artistic journey was one of constant experimentation and a quest for objectivity. His eclectic style, characterized by bright and diverse colors and an expressive brushstroke, reflected his ongoing engagement with the world around him. As an observer and interpreter of his time, Mambor's work continues to resonate with contemporary audiences, offering insights into the artistic and cultural milieu of the second half of the 20th century. His legacy is preserved through the works he left behind and the influence he had on the generations of artists that followed.
