Bengt Lindstrom Biography

Bengt Karl Erik Lindström was born on September 3, 1925, in Berg Municipality, located in the picturesque region of Härjedalen, Sweden. From the very beginning of his life, Lindström was immersed in a world rich with Nordic culture and tradition. Just three days after his birth, he was given a "Baptism of the Earth" by his godfather, the Sámi King Kroik. This ceremony, where a child is placed between two roots of a tree, was meant to grant him protection from the gods, symbolizing the deep connection between Lindström and the Sámi culture that would profoundly influence his work throughout his career. Growing up in the vast landscapes of Sápmi, also known as Lapland, Lindström was surrounded by mountain ranges, glistening lakes, and endless forests. This environment, along with the tales and legends of the Great White North told by the Sámi people and local lumberjacks, deeply impacted his artistic vision. Lindström's early life in Härnösand, a small city on Sweden's east coast, was where he discovered his passion for painting while attending school. He was not only an artist but also an athlete and a writer of short science-fiction stories. In 1944, Lindström moved to Stockholm to study under the Swedish painter Isaac Grünewald. His quest for artistic knowledge took him further afield, to the Copenhagen Fine Arts School in Denmark, where he participated in drawing lessons given by Aksel Jörgensen. The year 1946 marked a significant turn in his journey as he traveled to the United States to study at the Art Institute of Chicago. Inspired by the vibrant art scene, he then moved to Paris in 1947, where he studied under the French painters André Lhote and Fernand Léger. It was in Paris that Lindström's unique style began to flourish, supported by a scholarship from the Swedish magazine Aftontidningen, which allowed him to settle into a workshop in Arcueil, France. Lindström's work is characterized by its vivid colors and often includes contorted faces, a style that became his signature. He was one of Sweden's best-known contemporary artists, and his work added new dimensions to 20th-century art. His appreciation of Sámi culture and the way he incorporated its traditions into his work led to a new visual expression that became highly recognized around the world. Lindström's art was exhibited in Europe and the United States, earning him a solid reputation among the public and his peers. Throughout his career, Lindström was influenced by the ethnic traditions of the Nordic world and Sámi culture, as well as the paintings of the COBRA group, which he encountered during his studies in Copenhagen. Unlike the COBRA group, Lindström used paint by the bucket, with heavy applications of mostly primary and secondary saturated colors, using his fingers as well as big brushes. He believed in working with extremely pure and intense colors to create harmonies that were not merely decorative but had a soul that could move the viewer. Lindström's oeuvre includes a wide variety of media, such as oil and acrylic works, mural paintings, colorful sculptures, glass, dry point, tapestries, graffiti art, lithography, and engraving. His most famous sculpture is the massive Y-sculpture at Midlanda Airport north of Sundsvall, Sweden. Among his notable works are seven monumental art pieces depicting the gods from Scandinavian mythology and a series of large blue acrylic paintings. In 2003, Lindström became disabled due to a stroke, which rendered him unable to paint. Despite this, his legacy continued to grow, and in 2004, a film about his life, "Lindström - Le Diable de la Couleur et de la Forme" (Lindström – A Hell of a Feeling for Colour and Form), was released. Bengt Lindström passed away on January 29, 2008, at his home in Sundsvall, Sweden, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate audiences around the world. His work is displayed in more than 38 major museums globally and is sold by prestigious galleries, underscoring his status as one of the great Nordic icons in the art world.
