His journey into the world of art began after completing his Abitur, when he studied under the influential woodcutter HAP Grieshaber at the Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe from 1957 to 1959. This period was crucial in shaping his artistic direction, as it was here that he began to explore the balance between figurative painting and L'Art Informel, a movement that sought to break away from traditional forms of art. In 1959, Antes's work was recognized with two prestigious awards: the art prize of the city of Hannover and the Pankofer prize at the German Youth Art Award. In 1984, he resumed teaching at the Akademie in Karlsruhe, where he continued to influence young artists for another 16 years. Antes's artistic versatility is evident in his diverse range of mediums, which includes paintings, graphics, and sculptures in public spaces. His thematic explorations have been inspired by various sources, including Sienese painting of the Trecento and the spatial experiences of late Cubism.
