Alberto Garutti Biography

Alberto Garutti was born in the small town of Galbiate, Italy, in 1948. Throughout his life, he has been a prolific artist and an influential educator, leaving an indelible mark on the contemporary art scene, both in Italy and internationally. Garutti's career has been characterized by a deep engagement with the public sphere and a commitment to fostering dialogue between art, space, and community. Garutti's journey as an artist began in earnest in the 1970s, a period marked by his exploration of the narrative and immaterial dimensions of art. His work from this time reveals a growing interest in the relationship between the production of objects and their interaction with viewers. This interest would become a defining feature of his practice, as he sought to create art that was not just to be viewed but experienced and engaged with by the public. In the 1990s, Garutti's focus on public art became more pronounced. He began to create works that were deeply integrated into the urban environment, often originating within existing communities and sometimes fostering new ones. His approach to public art was a departure from the traditional, monumental sculptures that dominated the field. Instead, Garutti's works were anti-monumental, engaging directly with citizens and reflecting a more social practice of art. Garutti's teaching career was as significant as his artistic practice. He served as a professor at several prestigious institutions, including the Academy of Bologna from 1990 to 1993, the Academy of Brera in Milan from 1993 to 2013, the Politecnico of Milan, and the IUAV in Venice. His unique pedagogical approach influenced a generation of artists, and his impact as an educator was celebrated in the exhibition "Fuoriclasse. 20 Years of Italian Art from the Courses of Alberto Garutti" at the GAM Galleria d’Arte Moderna in Milan. Garutti's work has been featured in major international events and institutions, such as the Venice Biennale in 1990, 2010, and 2014; the Istanbul Biennial in 2001; and the Memory Marathon at the Serpentine Gallery in London in 2012. His art has been displayed in numerous group exhibitions in museums and public spaces around the world, including the S.M.A.K. Museum in Ghent, Belgium, the 21st Century Museum of Modern Art in Kanazawa, Japan, MARTa Museum in Herford, and the Moscow Museum of Modern Art. One of Garutti's most notable solo exhibitions was "Didascalia / Caption" at the PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan in 2012-2013, curated by Paola Nicolin and Hans Ulrich Obrist. This retrospective traced the evolution of his work over three decades, showcasing his multifaceted approach to art that includes photography, sculpture, installation, and sound. Garutti's public artworks are particularly significant, as they often serve to create relationships and links between public and private institutions and the social fabric of cities. His public art projects have been commissioned in various cities and museums, and he has won several awards for his contributions to the field, including the Terna 02 and the Prize for Culture in the city of Ghent. In 2022, Garutti presented a site-specific artwork for the new branch of the MAXXI Museum in L’Aquila, and his solo show “Credo di ricordare, 1974” opened in Museo Chini (Borgo San Lorenzo). A comprehensive monograph about his life and works, ideated by Germano Celant and curated by Antonella Soldaini with scientific research by Eva Fabbris, is set to be published, providing an in-depth look at his artistic journey. Garutti's works are enlivened by his memories and the relationship between human beings and their natural and vital environments. His art contains the mystical sense of nature and often investigates the relationship between the natural and the artificial. Garutti's legacy is one of an artist who has consistently sought to engage with the public, to activate the historical and emotional memory of places, and to provoke reflection on the relationship between art, politics, and civil society.
