Ferruccio Gard Biography

Ferruccio Gard is a distinguished Italian artist renowned for his pioneering contributions to the realms of Programmed Art, Kinetic Art, and Optical Art. Born in late December 1940 in Vestignè, Turin, Gard's origins trace back to the ancient Franco-Provençal culture. His artistic journey began in earnest in 1969, marking him as one of the earliest Italian exponents of his chosen disciplines. Gard's love for Venice, often referred to as the "City of the Doges," led him to move there in 1973, where he has since lived and worked, establishing his studio on the picturesque island of Lido. His deep connection to the city is evident in his work and life, and he has been an integral part of the Venetian contemporary art scene for decades. Throughout his illustrious career, Gard has been a regular participant in the Venice Biennale, showcasing his work in seven editions of this prestigious event (1982, 1986, 1995, 2007, 2009, 2011, and 2017). He has also been featured in two Architecture Biennials (2016 and 2021) and the 11th Rome Quadrennial in 1986. His contributions to the art world extend beyond these exhibitions, with his work being included in significant trend exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum of Contemporary Art of Buenos Aires (MACBA) and the Latin American Contemporary Art Museum of La Plata (MACLA) in Argentina. Gard's art has not only been celebrated in exhibitions but also through academic discourse, with various graduate theses at the Ca' Foscari University of Venice dedicated to his work. His influence is further acknowledged by the anthology curated by Gabriella Belli at the Fondazione Musei Civici di Venezia in 2015, which was held at Ca' Pesaro, the International Gallery of Modern Art. This exhibition placed Gard's work in dialogue with masterpieces by iconic artists such as Klimt, Kandinsky, Chagall, Munch, Rodin, Martini, Medardo Rosso, Mirò, Calder, Arp, De Chirico, and others, cementing his status as a master of Venetian contemporaneity. Gard's contributions to the art world have been recognized by art historians and critics alike. Enzo Di Martino celebrated Gard's exhibition as "a celebration" in the Gazzettino. His work has also been discussed by world-famous critics and written about by notable artists, including Piero Dorazio and Virgilio Guidi, as well as renowned poets and writers such as Jorge Amado, Andrea Zanzotto, and Paolo Ruffilli. His first national artistic recognition in Italy came in 1974 when he was invited to participate in the 12th National Quadriennale of the Society to Promote Fine Art in Turin. For thirty years, from 1978 to 2008, he collaborated with the Art Group neo constructivist, kinetic, and programmed "Verifica 8 + 1," founded in Venice-Mestre by painter Sara Campesan. Gard's works are part of important public and private collections, including the Ca’ Pesaro Museum of Modern Art in Venice and the Satoru Sato Museum in Japan. In 2011, he was one of the artists invited to officially represent Italy at the Italian National Pavilion in the 54th International Venice Biennale. His international presence is marked by over 150 solo exhibitions worldwide, in cities such as Beijing, New York, Prague, Brussels, Salzburg, and Lienz, among others. Ferruccio Gard's art is characterized by a masterful use of color and form, which has inspired many artists and even led to his work being emulated. His pieces often feature dynamic compositions that engage the viewer's perception, creating a sense of movement and depth. Gard's dedication to exploring the interplay between visual perception and artistic expression has made him a central figure in the movements he represents and a source of inspiration for both contemporaries and future generations of artists.
