Sam Francis Biography

Samuel Lewis Francis, known as Sam Francis, was an influential American painter and printmaker, born on June 25, 1923, in San Mateo, California. His life and work spanned a period of intense transformation in the art world, and he is celebrated as a key figure in the second generation of Abstract Expressionists. Francis's journey into the world of art was as unconventional as it was dramatic, marked by personal tragedy and a relentless pursuit of creative expression. Francis's early life was not initially focused on art. He studied medicine and psychology at the University of California at Berkeley. However, his trajectory changed dramatically during World War II when he served as a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1943, Francis suffered a severe spinal injury in a plane crash, which led to a prolonged hospitalization. It was during this time, confined to a hospital bed and immobile except for his head and arms, that he began to paint as a form of distraction and quickly became engrossed in the process. This experience not only diverted his career path from medicine to art but also deeply influenced his later work, which often explored themes of confinement and freedom. After his release from the hospital, Francis continued his education in art, studying under David Park and earning both a BA and an MA from the University of California. His first abstract work was painted in 1947, and by 1950, he had moved to Paris, where he was exposed to the works of Tachist painters and the influential American artist Jackson Pollock. This period was transformative for Francis; he immersed himself in the study of Monet’s Water Lilies and developed close friendships with notable artists such as Al Held, Joan Mitchell, and Jean-Paul Riopelle. Francis's work from this period is characterized by his lyrical and elegant approach, with canvases typically presenting brilliant colors flowing in amorphous forms over unprimed canvas. He applied thinly textured paint with dripping and splashing techniques, creating areas of bright color that formed powerful asymmetries. His painting "Blue on a Point" from 1958 exemplifies this style. Francis is often credited with introducing a lyrical and sensual use of paint and color to Abstract Expressionism, and his work is seen as a bridge between this movement and Color Field painting. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Francis's reputation grew, and he became known for his exuberant large-scale abstract paintings that incorporated elements from various art movements. His work was featured in over 100 solo exhibitions, and he was one of the first post-World War II American painters to develop an international reputation. Francis's art was not only influenced by his American roots but also by his extensive travels and exposure to different cultures, particularly in Europe and Asia. In the 1960s, Francis's style evolved, and he began leaving large areas of his canvas unpainted, focusing his application of color on the edges. This minimalist approach was perhaps a response to the prevailing trends of the time, but in the 1970s and 1980s, he returned to a more vibrant and lush palette. His work from these later periods continued to explore the interplay between color, light, and space, and he remained a significant figure in the California school of modern abstract painting. Beyond painting, Francis was also a noteworthy printmaker and publisher. He established the Litho Shop in 1970, a facility for print artists, and in 1984, he founded Lapis Press, dedicated to producing artists' books. His interest in the creative process was expansive, encompassing art, technology, psychology, science, medicine, and environmental conservation. He was an early investor in research for renewable energy sources and medical cures, reflecting his belief in the importance of creativity and experimentation across various fields. Sam Francis passed away on November 4, 1994, in Santa Monica, California, at the age of 71. His legacy is preserved through the Sam Francis Foundation, which aims to research, document, protect, and perpetuate his creative legacy. Francis's work continues to be celebrated and studied for its vibrant energy, emotional depth, and its contribution to the evolution of abstract art in the 20th century. His paintings are held in major museum collections and institutions around the world, a testament to his enduring influence on the art world.
