Pericle Fazzini Biography

Pericle Fazzini, born on May 4, 1913, in Grottammare, Italy, emerged as a pivotal figure in the 20th-century art world, renowned for his profound contributions as a sculptor and painter. His journey into the realms of art began in the familial setting of his father's carpentry workshop, where he first engaged with the craft of wood carving. This early exposure laid the foundational stone for Fazzini's artistic pursuits, which were further nurtured through formal education and a series of significant achievements and contributions that spanned his lifetime. In 1930, at the tender age of 17, Fazzini's artistic path took a decisive turn when he moved to Rome, encouraged by the poet Mario Rivosecchi. This move was instrumental in his development as an artist, providing him with the opportunity to study at the Free School of the Nude at the Academy of Fine Arts. The following year marked the beginning of Fazzini's recognition in the art world when he won a competition for the design of a funeral monument for Cardinal Dusmet in Catania. This early success was a harbinger of the accolades and accomplishments that would follow. Throughout the 1930s and 1940s, Fazzini's career flourished as he participated in prestigious competitions and exhibitions, including the National Artistic Pensioner competition, the II Quadrennial of Rome, and the XXI Venice Biennale. His works from this period, characterized by their dynamic forms and expressive quality, garnered critical acclaim and established him as a leading figure in European sculpture. Notably, his participation in the artistic movement Corrente and his association with the Milanese art magazine of the same name underscored his commitment to the avant-garde. The post-war period saw Fazzini's style evolve, as he delved into monumental projects and explored new materials and techniques. His teaching appointments at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence and Rome further solidified his influence on the next generation of artists. Among his most significant works from this era are the portal of the church of San Giovanni Battista, the Fountain for the Palazzo dell'ENI in Rome, and the Monument for the Resistance in Ancona. However, it was the commission of the Resurrection for the Sala Nervi in the Vatican in 1970 that would become Fazzini's magnum opus. Unveiled in 1977, this monumental sculpture captures the essence of Fazzini's artistic vision, depicting Jesus rising from a nuclear crater in a powerful statement against the backdrop of 20th-century anxieties over nuclear war. The Resurrection, with its dynamic forms and emotive force, stands as a testament to Fazzini's mastery of sculpture and his profound engagement with the human condition. Fazzini's contributions to the art world were recognized through numerous awards and exhibitions, including the Premio Torino, the Saint Vincent Prize, and his participation in the Twentieth-Century Italian Art exhibition at the MoMA in New York. His teaching career, which spanned over two decades, and his involvement in significant anthologies further attest to his enduring impact on the field of art. Pericle Fazzini passed away on December 4, 1987, in Rome, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and captivate. His works, characterized by their intricate forms and existential depth, remain a powerful reflection of the human spirit's resilience and creativity. Fazzini's art, transcending time and place, speaks to the universal themes of struggle, redemption, and the perpetual quest for meaning in an ever-changing world.
