Mino Delle-Site Biography

Mino Delle Site, born in Lecce in 1914, was a pivotal figure in the Italian Futurism movement, particularly known for his contributions to its second wave. His journey into the art world began at a remarkably young age. At just twelve years old, Delle Site enrolled in a local art school in Lecce, having already gained experience as an engraver for a small school newspaper. This early start laid the foundation for a career that would see him become one of the most important exponents of Italian Futurism. Delle Site's artistic endeavors were significantly influenced by his growing familiarity with various avant-garde European styles, including Analytical and Synthetic Cubism and German Expressionism. These influences are evident in his work, which often features the dynamic themes and innovative techniques characteristic of Futurism. His art was not just a reflection of the movement's fascination with speed, technology, and modernity but also an exploration of new means of expression. These included "lines of force" to convey the directional tendencies of objects through space, "simultaneity" to combine memories, present impressions, and anticipation of future events, and "emotional ambience," where the artist intuitively links the exterior scene with the interior emotional landscape. In 1932, Delle Site made his debut on the art scene with a solo exhibition at the Roman Bragaglia gallery. This marked the beginning of his active participation in the Futurist movement. He was one of the youngest members of this second wave of Italian Futurism, a movement that sought to break away from traditional forms of art to embrace the dynamism and energy of the modern world. Futurism celebrated the technological advancements of the time, such as cars, airplanes, and the industrial city, and Delle Site's work vividly captured this spirit of innovation and change. One of the distinctive aspects of Delle Site's contribution to Futurism was his involvement in Aeropainting (Aeropittura), a sub-genre of Futurism that focused on the aerial landscape and the sensations of flight. His work in this area was recognized for its creativity and vitality, capturing the magnetic and pulsing energy of the modern age from an aerial perspective. This was a testament to his ability to push the boundaries of traditional painting and explore new horizons in art. Delle Site's artistic talent was not confined to painting alone. In 1932, he also ventured into the design of Futurist accessories, coming up with innovative ideas such as asymmetrical and metallic ties, minuscule ties, and ties in the form of a bandage. These designs were a reflection of the Futurist movement's interest in reimagining every aspect of life and culture to reflect the modern world's dynamism and speed. Throughout his career, Delle Site's work was featured in numerous exhibitions and auctions, reflecting his status as a significant figure in the Impressionist & Modern art scene. His contributions to Italian Futurism and the broader avant-garde movement were profound, leaving a lasting impact on the art world. Mino Delle Site passed away in 1996, but his legacy as a pioneering artist who embraced the future with boldness and creativity continues to inspire.
