Nicola De-Maria Biography

Nicola De Maria, born on December 6, 1954, in Foglianise, Italy, is a distinguished Italian painter renowned for his abstract figurative works that are characterized by their lyrical and colorful nature. De Maria's journey into the world of art is as fascinating as his creations. Despite earning a master's degree in medicine, De Maria's passion for art led him to pivot from a potential career in healthcare to becoming a full-fledged artist. This transition was marked by his first wall painting executed in Milan in 1977, the same year he exhibited at the Paris Biennale. This bold move set the stage for a prolific career that would see him become a pivotal figure in the Italian and international art scenes. De Maria is most often associated with the Transavanguardia movement, an art movement that emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The movement, named and first exhibited by Italian art critic and curator Achille Bonito Oliva at the "Aperto 80" section of the 39th Venice Biennale in 1980, sought to move beyond the avant-garde movements of the time by reintroducing emotion, figuration, and symbolism into art. Alongside De Maria, the principal artists of the Transavantgarde included Sandro Chia, Francesco Clemente, Enzo Cucchi, Nino Longobardi, Luigi Ontani, and Mimmo Paladino. De Maria's contributions to this movement were significant, with his works being included in major exhibitions such as documenta 7 in Kassel, Germany, in 1982, and the Venice Biennale in 1990, where he presented five "Space Paintings." De Maria's art is a lyrical transposition of his inner universe, vividly brought to life through his use of color and form. He describes himself as "one who writes a poem, fingers dirty with paint," a testament to his belief in the fusion of painting and poetry in the pursuit of art's triumph. His works are not confined by the traditional boundaries of the canvas, often expanding into installations that transform spaces into total environments. This approach is rooted in his "principle of improvisation," where he creates without a preconceived plan, allowing his expressive urgency to guide the creation process. A recurring theme in De Maria's work is the motif of flowers, which he considers to be universal creatures that encapsulate the best of the world and nature. For De Maria, flowers are in touch with the planets, moving in harmony with one another, and represent his cosmic ambition to embrace all possible worlds within his work. This ambition is evident in pieces such as "Testa dell’artista cosmico a Torino" (1984–85) and "I fiori salutano la luna" (Flowers Greeting the Moon, 1984), where he explores the internal processes of his mind and the relationship between art, nature, and the cosmos. De Maria's work has been exhibited in prestigious institutions worldwide, including the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, the Pompidou Centre in Paris, and the Castello di Rivoli in Turin. His art is celebrated for its ability to transform the mishaps and brutality of the world into beauty and harmony, a reflection of his belief in the transformative power of art. Through his vibrant and expansive works, De Maria continues to challenge and inspire, making him one of the most influential figures in contemporary Italian art.
