Jose-Maria Cano Biography

José María Cano Andrés, born on February 21, 1959, in Madrid, Spain, is a multifaceted artist whose career spans across music, visual arts, and composition. His journey into the arts began at a young age, showing an early interest in drawing. This passion led him to attend the Rafael Hidalgo de Caviedes academy followed by the Artaquio academy, where he honed his skills in drawing and painting, preparing for a career in architecture. However, his path took a different turn as he ventured into the world of music and later, visual arts, establishing himself as a prominent figure in both fields. Cano's musical career took off in the early 1980s when he, along with his brother Nacho and singer Ana Torroja, formed the Spanish pop-rock band Mecano. The band, with José María as one of its principal composers, quickly rose to fame, becoming one of the most successful Spanish pop bands of all time. Their music, characterized by a unique blend of pop and rock, captivated audiences worldwide, selling over 25 million albums. Mecano's songs, many of which were composed by Cano, such as "Hijo de la Luna," "Cruz de navajas," and "Me cuesta tanto olvidarte," became anthems of the era and are still celebrated today. After the band separated in 1992, Cano continued his musical journey, composing an opera titled "Luna," which featured Plácido Domingo and Renée Fleming in leading roles, and creating the anthem for the football club Real Madrid. Transitioning from music to visual arts in the late 1990s, Cano embarked on a new phase of his artistic career. His work as a visual artist is marked by a deep exploration of contemporary issues such as human rights, capitalism, and the impacts of war, alongside personal themes from his life, including his divorce and the relationship with his son. Cano's art is known for its diverse techniques, ranging from oil to resin and canvas to paper, showcasing his versatility and innovative approach to art-making. His most notable series, "The Wall Street 100," features large-scale portraits based on newspaper clippings from the Wall Street Journal, offering a critical view of influential figures in the financial world. Cano's art has been exhibited in numerous galleries and museums worldwide, standing alongside works by legendary artists like Picasso and Goya. His exhibitions have been held in prestigious cities such as London, Hanoi, Madrid, Beijing, and Tokyo, among others, highlighting his international appeal and recognition. His work not only reflects his Spanish heritage, as seen in his homage to bulls, but also delves into more spiritual themes, including paintings of apostles and the moon, showcasing his broad thematic range. Beyond his artistic achievements, Cano's life has been marked by controversy, such as his involvement in the Paradise Papers, revealing his offshore account in Malta. Despite this, he continues to be celebrated for his contributions to both the music and art worlds. Currently residing in London, Cano lives in the historic house where Peter Pan was written, surrounded by a circle of celebrity friends and continuing to create art that challenges and inspires. José María Cano's journey from a young artist with architectural aspirations to a renowned musician and visual artist is a testament to his enduring creativity and versatility. His work, whether through the medium of music or visual arts, continues to engage and provoke thought, making him a significant figure in contemporary art and culture.
